Arts and culture are an important part of our community, and KAUST embraces its role as a cultural hub within Saudi Arabia, aligning with Vision 2030’s goal of enhancing quality of life and fostering cultural engagement. In 2023, KAUST celebrated arts and culture by offering a rich array of over 40 events, from musical performances and public art performances to cultural festivals and community art exhibitions.
Highlighting the musical performances of the year, some of KAUST’s diverse events included: Community Life’s series Music and Picnics in the Park, a unique outdoor concert experience focused on different instruments and musical genres; the Office of the Arts’ intimate Sunset Concerts in the campus Library, where listeners could appreciate the scenic views of the Red Sea and our Beacon while enjoying musical performances; the Community Recitals concert series, where talented community musicians play at the Discovery Square Theatre; the annual KAUST Got Talent competition; the School of Rock musical by The KAUST School (TKS); multiple concerts by the KAUST Ministry of DJs group; the Open Mic Nights organized by the Music Club; and several other musical performances and art events with local artists convened by the different departments and community clubs.
In addition to the musical performances, several other inclusive art workshops, exhibitions, lectures, and community open discussions enhanced the cultural fabric at KAUST, with several ad hoc shows and ongoing programs providing enriching experiences for attendees.
These activities contribute significantly to SDG 3, Good Health and Well-Being, by providing community members with opportunities for social engagement, stress relief, and emotional wellness; SDG 4, Quality Education, by offering inclusive, creative spaces and encouraging lifelong learning and cultural appreciation; and SDG 11, Sustainable Cities and Communities, by fostering a thriving, culturally rich environment that values local talent and heritage. Through these events, KAUST promotes creativity, supports local talent, and fosters an inclusive environment that strengthens the university’s role in cultural development.
