Bike Week 2022

Let’s ride our bikes together for a sustainable future during the sixth KAUST Bike Week. From 4-9 December 2022, keeping in mind the extreme climate impact, why not try to leave your car at home and bike for a greener tomorrow?

Road transportation, such as cars, motorcycles, and buses, accounts for 11.9 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions (Source: ourworldindata.org). Biking is a greener mode of transportation that is fun and keeps you healthy. So, pump some air into those tires, oil your bike chain and get ready for a week full of activities that we hope will inspire you to cycle more within KAUST year-round.

Cycling for a greener world

Biking is much more than not burning fossil fuel. It is a simple act that can help communities contribute to the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. By biking you contribute to for example goal #3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages, and goal #11: Contribute to sustainable cities and communities.

Help the world towards a greener future by choosing your bike over your car, it doesn’t get much easier than that.

Bike and Road Safety

Please be aware of the traffic rules and drive safely. Keep in mind the following rules:

  • Carry passengers in a seat designed for that purpose and always let them wear a securely fastened bicycle helmet.
  • Wear an approved, securely fastened bicycle helmet that conforms to international safety standards.
  • Always ride on the right side of the lane, moving in the same direction as the other traffic. A minimum distance of 1.5 meters (5 feet) is recommended.
  • Keep a safe distance from other bicycles, driving and parked cars.
  • Always pass other bikers on the left side.
  • Always use hand signals to indicate where you’re going.
  • Check over your shoulders for approaching vehicles before changing lanes or turning.
  • If crossing roads on a crosswalk, unmount from your bike and cross by foot.
  • Do not use handheld mobile phones, iPods, or other mobile devices while cycling unless it is completely hands-free or in a mounting affixed to the vehicle.
  • Do not bike in Discovery Square.

Kids 10 years old and younger should be accompanied by an adult while biking during an event.

5:30 pm
Venue: IRC, Canopy area next to the swimming pool

Whether you’re a roadie or an off-road mountain biker, your body is forced into an unnatural, unusual position. After spending so much time in the same hunched position, the neck, back, and chest can all start to feel very tight. In this session, we’ll focus on spine, neck, lower, and middle back mobilization to lubricate and free up the back area, which should help maintain a better riding posture. Organized by Community Life.

Enjoy the sunset during a bike ride with the Red Sea Cyclists club.

8:00 pm

The session focuses on the all-important shoulders and wrists. Cycling on and off-road puts pressure and strain on these areas of the body. The more saddle time you get in, the more niggles you’re likely to feel, whether that’s stiffness and tightness or reduced flexibility. This session will focus on building strength and stability to carry you through an active season of bike-related fun. Organized by Community Life.

5:30 pm
Venue: IRC, Canopy area next to the swimming pool

The repetitive nature of pushing power through the pedals in an unusual bent-over position towards the handlebars isn’t natural for the body. This position can commonly cause tightness all around the hip area. This yoga class will focus on the hips, hip flexors, and glutes. We’ll focus on increasing mobility and flexibility to release pain and discomfort while cycling. This should also help reduce the chance of future injuries. Organized by Community Life.

5:45 pm
Venue: KAUST Beacon

Come and sweat during a one-hour free outdoor spinning class. Note: first come, first served basis. Organized by Community Life.

6:00 pm
Venue: I Love KAUST logo

Did you ever curse because of a flat tire, and a long distance to the closest repair shop? No longer necessary, the Red Sea Cyclists club gladly teaches how to fix a flat. Flat tires, and a repair kit are provided by the club, just follow along the instructions of our volunteers.

Whether on-road or off-road, while cycling, your legs are constantly engaged. The repetitive movements through the legs can lead to tightness and imbalances, as we often all have one preferred leg to lead with. This session will focus on the quads and hamstrings. For every cracking descent, there’s a challenging climb and, thus, tight quads, muscles, and hamstrings. We’ll focus on flexibility to unravel knotty muscles post-ride.

6:15 am
Venue: Discovery Square
