In celebration of this year’s World Oceans Day, join this fascinating webinar on “Rebuilding Marine Life,” presented by KAUST’s Ibn Sina Distinguished Professor of Marine Science Carlos Duarte and organized by the Springer Nature Sustainable Development Goals Programme. During this live event, taking place on June 6 at 11:00 am, you will also have the opportunity to ask Professor Duarte questions during the live Q&A session after the talk.

Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) and Water Desalination Plant Open House Tours
Here is your chance to be a part of the exclusive tours of KAUST’s Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) and the Seawater Reverse Osmosis Desalination (SWRO) Plant, organized by the Campus and Community department and the IWA-KAUST Students Chapter!
Discover how our ocean provides our community with its most precious resource by witnessing the entire process that transforms seawater into potable water at our SWRO plant. Additionally, learn how we treat all our wastewater for reuse at the WWTP’s state-of-the-art plant, ensuring our sewage effluents do not contaminate and pollute our shores.
Meeting point: Building 16, bus stop.

Tour to the Coastal and Marine Resources Core Lab
Join this tour to explore the Coastal and Marine Resources Core Lab (CMR). CMR is a complete marine station specializing in marine operations, oceanographic instrumentation, and wet lab experimentation. It operates a fleet of boats and Saudi Arabia’s first fully-equipped research vessel, the RV Thuwal. In this tour, you will learn about the research at CMR related to fish nutrition, reproduction and environmental assessment, and discover how research catalyzes the path towards a healthier ocean.

Enjoy this movie night with a special screening of the award-winning documentary “My Octopus Teacher”. Dive into the mesmerizing underwater world and witness the incredible bond between a filmmaker and an extraordinary octopus. Bring your friends and family to experience an evening of inspiration and wonder as we celebrate the beauty and mystery of our oceans.

Special Artwork Display at Discovery Square
Grab the opportunity to enjoy a special artwork display at Discovery Square, created by the Campus and Community department in collaboration with The KAUST School elementary students. The “Fish Tail,” a sculpture filled with plastic waste, highlights the impact of plastic pollution on marine ecosystems. Witness how young artists transform waste into a powerful environmental statement. Additional works include the “Humming Tree,” adorned with over 2,000 bottle caps and upcycled dream catchers, and a revitalized tree adorned with repurposed plastics.
